Activities

German:
For the last number of years the children in 5th and 6th classes have been learning German. Our German teacher, Frau Rouse, takes each of the classes for an hour every week.  The children work hard and enjoy learning a new language. Last year we had a German Day when we had a concert and a display of some of the work we did during the year.

Choir

The school choir is conducted by teachers Paula Nugent and Lisa Smith. The choir practice every Friday and are looking forward to participating in some choral events during the year.  Each year we take part in the Hallejuah Choir Concert which is held in the RDS in December. We have just started to practice for this year's concert.

Book Writing

Ms Grant's and Ms Moynihan's 5th Class wrote books last term. It was a lot of fun and very interesting. We were allowed to choose any topic we wanted. Everyone in our class wrote a book. Danny wrote his on Podge and Rodge. We all got about a month to write our book. We had to do an illustration on every page. A month felt like only a few days when we were writing. At the start we thought it would be boring but it turned out to be great fun. I never thought writing a book could be such fun.

Our Religion Displays

For our school display we decided to do different religions around the world. Our class, Ms Callanan's, did Buddhism. This is what other classes did - 6th Class did Judaism, 4th class did Hinduism and 3rd Class did Sikhism.

All the classes put in a lot of work and they were all brilliant

Confirmation:
Over 60 children will be confirmed this year from St Mary’s SNS.  The Confirmation will take place on Wednesday, 23rd March, 2011 in our Lady’s Church, Blessington.

Green Day:

Our teacher asked us if we would like to do some fundraising. We decided to support the Irish Cancer Society's 'Green Day'. After we discussed how we should do it we all got an A3 page and designed and decorated posters for display all around the school. When Friday came the whole school was green and everyone was dressed in green. We raised €386 and we sent it off to the Irish Cancer Society. A week or two later we received a certificate from the Society and a big thank-you for a great donation and they also thanked us for thinking of them.

Extra Curricular Activities

Hurling & Camogie:
Coaching and training will be arranged shortly. The Wicklow County Board organises coaches to go around to the schools and this has been a great success each year. We are looking forward to it again this year.

Athletics:
Several times a year we send athletes to compete in competitions around Wicklow. The Valleymount races and the Cumann Na mBunscoil Races in Greystones are two of the highlights of the year. Once again the school athletes did us proud last year bringing home a tremendous haul of medals.

Olympic Handball:
Training takes place on school grounds, for 5th & 6th classes, on Tueesdays.  We compete in the South Dublin Olympic Handball League. Congratulations to our U-13 Boys who won the South Dublin League in great style twice during the past three years. Congratulations to last year's U-13 girls team who won the Dublin U-13 Plate  for the very first time. Here's hoping this year's teams can continue our proud record.

Spiketball:
Training takes place in the GP Room of the school, for 5th & 6th classes, once a week from 2.30pm – 3.15pm (day not finalised yet). Our team have reached the All Ireland Finals for the past two years. Both years we eventually came third. A terrific achievement.

Gaelic Football:
Last year training took place in the new GAA grounds every Thursday for 5th & 6th classes, 2.45pm – 3.45pm.  Many thanks to Mr. Sheridan and Mr McCorristine for all the coaching. Both the Girls and Boys teams took part in several Blitz Competitions during the year.  Many thanks to the GAA Club for making their facilities available to us at all times. Huge thanks also to Lorcan McMahon for all the superb coaching during the year. We look forward to Lorcan returning again this year.

Soccer League

Last term we had an indoor soccer league. It was run by Mr Sheridan and Mr Mc Corristine. A lot of people took part from 3rd class all the way up to 6th class. There was League 1 and league 2. League 1 was for 5th and 6th classes and League 2 was for 3rd and 4th classes. The winners from both leagues were awarded medals. We also got t-shirts with our photos on them and we all signed them.

It was a great league and hopefully it will be on again next year.

Many thanks to Mr Sheridan and Mr Mc Corristine for running the Leagues.

Summer Camp:
Every year some of the staff at St. Mary’s run a summer camp for the children.  It runs over two weeks and is a great way to keep your children entertained as it provides a number of fun activities.  The camp is run by Ms Nugent, Ms Power & Ms Smith.  Please contact the school for booking information.

Music:
For the last number of years Mr Terry Clancy has been coming to the school to teach music after school hours.  He teaches recorder and a number of other instruments and  puts on a show on a regular basis so as parents can see how their children are doing.
